Using Tutorial Videos to Market Your Brand: Marketing Campaign Review

by Carter Hartong | November 24, 2020

''The most that any of us can seem to do is to fashion something - an object, or ourselves - and drop it into the confusion, make an offering of it, so to speak, to the life force.''

Just the other day, I read this incredibly interesting Ernest Becker quote, and it has stuck with me for the past couple days. Sure, this is probably because this quote is pretty darn heavy. But, I just keep finding ways that it applies to not only my own daily life, but all of our lives. This quote from Becker may even explain why so many of us are naturally drawn towards hobbies. Whether it be painting, woodwork, knitting, reading, or anything else, these pastimes can become obsessions. And given the newfound free time that many of us have, new hobbies seem to be at an all-time high.

Many of us also want to get better at our hobbies. I, for example, have friends that are really into gaming, so they're always watching videos on how to beat a level or unlock a new skill. Because of our natural desire to be good at whatever it is we are offering to the "life force" (as Becker would say) , tutorial videos are a great way to get in front of your audience and market your brand. Let's take a look at a couple different how-to videos.

How to learn a skill

During quarantine I picked up bike riding, and I became quite passionate about it. The highlight of just about every day for me was taking my bike out on the road or trail. However, a new hobby means having to learn new skills, like fixing a flat tire. Checkout this video from REI. It is a great example of a tutorial video that can teach your audience a new skill.

How to make something new

Another great joy of a hobby is the ability to make something completely on your own, from start to finish. However, sometimes you may need a little help along the way. Cooking shows, for example, are a great way to make something with a friend who is guiding you along the way.

This video from CosBond is a tutorial we made here, at ATA. Notice how it is personal, yet still all about the final creation.

How to assemble

Some of the most popular how-to videos on YouTube are assembly videos. This video, for example, can show you how to build a computer in just 15 minutes! It is really impressive when a tutorial can simplify the most complicated tasks to help the viewer.

Hobbies don't just make up what we do, but who we are. And, helping with someone's hobby is a great way to market your brand, since it positions you as a knowledgeable authority on the subject. So, let's get learning, and let's get creating with tutorial videos!
